A milestonemoment for UK transport!
Today’s release of the UK Transport Artificial Intelligence Action Plan marks a defining moment for our sector and one I’ve personally been anticipating for some time. It’s not often that government policy captures the pace and potential of technological change, but the Department for Transport’s vision for “responsible AI embedded in a resilient transport system delivering cheaper, cleaner and safer journeys for all” does exactly that.
As CEO of Alchera Technologies, I see this as a breakthrough: a national acknowledgement that AI is no longer an experimental tool on the periphery of transport operations, but a core enabler of future mobility.
What stands out to me in this plan is its clarity and pragmatism. The government has laid out five action areas - Leadership, Skills, Infrastructure & Data, Applications and Engagement - that actually feel actionable. These are the foundations required to accelerate innovation responsibly and at scale.
I’m particularly encouraged by:
- Concrete commitments to collaborate with local authorities on AI-enabled traffic management (Action 1.5).
- Recognition of AI’s proven ability to unlock multi-million pound efficiencies - something we’ve already demonstrated through our work with ConnectPlus on the M25.
- Support for SMEs and innovators, with Transport Research Innovation Grants and wider ecosystem engagement clearly prioritised.
These aren’t abstract ambitions. They are signals that the UK is ready to move from vision to velocity.
Of course, it wouldn’t be transport without acknowledging the realities: procurement cycles remain lengthy, and operational adoption often lags policy intent. While the plan identifies the right opportunities, the implementation timeline will challenge the sector unless supported by complementary measures, such as the upcoming Transport Data Action Plan, which I believe will be a critical next step.
Still, what excites me most is the shift in tone.
The explicit recognition of hackathons, use-case heat maps and direct engagement with innovators marks a move from “wait and see” to “test and learn”. For companies like Alchera, working at the frontier of AI-powered transport intelligence, this is a welcome and long-awaited change. It validates a thesis we’ve championed for years: that AI can fundamentally transform how transport networks operate and how decisions are made.
The future of mobility is no longer defined solely by autonomous vehicles. It’s defined by a smarter, more efficient, data-driven transport system, one that adapts dynamically to the needs of passengers, operators, and the economy.
We’re proud to play a role in this transformation and we look forward to partnering with government and industry to help make the UK a global showcase for transport AI.
